Short Answer
A Christian wife with an unbelieving husband faces a unique challenge. While she is called to respect and love her husband, she is also responsible for remaining faithful to Christ and providing spiritual guidance for her children when her husband is not doing so.
The advice given was that she should not attempt to become the spiritual authority over her husband. Instead, she should seek to influence him through godly character, faithful witness, prayer, and wise opportunities for gospel conversations.
At the same time, she should actively lead her children spiritually by teaching God’s Word, encouraging faith, and creating a Christ-centered environment in the home.
The Overview
This question addresses a difficult reality many Christian women face:
“How do I honor my husband while still fulfilling my responsibility to follow Christ when he does not?”
The response emphasized balancing faithfulness to God with respect for the marriage relationship.
Your Husband Is Not Your Child
One important distinction made was that a wife is not called to become the spiritual authority over her husband.
An unbelieving husband may reject spiritual conversations, biblical instruction, or attempts at correction. In such situations, constant pressure or preaching often becomes ineffective.
Instead, Scripture encourages believing wives to display Christ through their conduct and character.
Evangelism Through Life and Words
When opportunities arise, a Christian wife should certainly share the gospel with her husband.
If he is open to discussion, she can:
- read Christian books together
- discuss biblical topics
- answer questions
- share her testimony
However, if he consistently refuses spiritual conversations, she may have to rely more heavily on the witness of her daily life and faithful Christian character.
Spiritual Leadership of Children
The strongest emphasis in the discussion was on the responsibility toward children.
If the husband is not providing spiritual guidance, the believing mother cannot simply leave the children without biblical instruction.
As much as circumstances allow, she should:
- teach Scripture
- pray with her children
- encourage church involvement
- model Christian living
- build a biblical foundation for their future
Staying Connected to the Church
Another important encouragement was maintaining strong involvement in the local church.
Healthy Christian community provides:
- discipleship
- encouragement
- accountability
- spiritual growth
This support becomes especially valuable when a spouse does not share the same faith.
Obedience to Christ Comes First
The discussion concluded by noting that a Christian wife must ultimately remain faithful to Christ even when facing resistance from an unbelieving spouse.
This does not mean being rebellious or disrespectful. Rather, it means continuing to pursue worship, fellowship, biblical growth, and obedience to God regardless of opposition.

How do I balance being a godly wife, but also the spiritual leader as my husband is unsaved? Yeah. Okay. Well, you’re called to be a spiritual leader. I think primarily Chloe is about you being a spiritual leader of your children because you’re supposed to be laying a foundation and raising them in the discipline, the admonition of God’s Word.
So, yeah, you’ve got to be a leader in your home, a spiritual leader in your home, because you’re not getting no spiritual input from your husband because he’s a non-Christian. So as it relates to your relationship with your husband, right, you are to be an evangelist to him insofar as you can. Which, according to First Peter chapter three, there are times where he didn’t want to hear it.
So all you’ve got is your life to work with. So I’m going to talk. I got plenty of people that talk to me about how to evangelize their non-Christian husbands, and I would just say sometimes they have an open door for discussion. Sometimes they’re even open to reading a book and discussing it with you about it. If your husband’s not that Chloe, well, then I’m going to have to say, okay.
Yeah, you’re just going to have to be a good common grace wife. And by that, I mean you’re doing all you can to be a good wife. And beyond that, a good Christian woman. And you can’t be the spiritual leader of him because he’s not interested in that, right? He’s a non-Christian, and he doesn’t want to hear that from you.
And if that’s the case, if it’s really clear and stern, well, then I go back to what the Bible says about Sarah and Abraham and trying to be the kind of person that shines so brightly with my behavior that it does a lot of the work of evangelism for me. So that’s as far as you can go, setting down rules for your your kids, though, and he may even try to veto some of that.
But I would say as much as you can in the context that you have, Chloe, you’re going to have to really be a just a good, strong spiritual leader for those children. And and that’s what I would do if you’re once your kids move out, well, then you do the best you can and you make sure you spend time in your women’s Bible study groups, and you’ve got good mentoring, discipleship going on at your church and your in church, obviously.
And your husband. I don’t care what he says about that. You’re going to have to deal with that, that that you’re going to have to do it regardless of the pushback that you get. And in that regard, that’s being a spiritual leader by doing what’s right, even when your husband doesn’t, doesn’t want you to do it. All right.
