Short Answer
It means false prophets will be extremely deceptive—but true believers (the elect) will not ultimately be led astray, even though the deception is powerful.
The Overview
In Matthew 24:24, Jesus warns that false messiahs and prophets will perform great signs and wonders to deceive people. The phrase “if possible, even the elect” emphasizes how strong this deception will be.
The “elect” refers to genuine believers—those who are truly saved and indwelt by the Holy Spirit. Because of this, they cannot ultimately fall away or be permanently deceived. However, Jesus uses this phrase to show that the deception will be so convincing that, if it were possible, even true believers would be deceived.
This warning is especially connected to the end times (the tribulation period), where figures like the Antichrist will perform real, supernatural signs empowered by evil forces. As described in 2 Thessalonians 2, these signs will mislead those who reject the truth.
At the same time, this principle applies even now. While the ultimate Antichrist is still to come, there are already many false teachers and deceptive influences in the world. As 1 John 2:18 explains, “many antichrists” are already present—serving as precursors to the final deception.
So, while believers do not need to fear losing their salvation, they are still called to be alert and discerning. Deception is real, and many people are led astray by false claims, counterfeit miracles, and misleading teachings.

Other one is Matthew 2424. Often wondering about this for a while, and I was talking about the deception of AI these days on social media especially, Jesus warns the false prophets and false messiahs will perform great size and wanted to see people if possible, even the elect. What does that mean? If possible, even the elect. Well, that means that during the tribulation period there will be people that are really saved.
I mean, think about revelation chapter seven and the 144,000. These are really saved, and they’re saving more people by evangelism. And if they’re really saved, the Holy Spirit dwells within them, and they’re called the elect or saints or whatever you want to call them. But they’re real people that are Christians with the Holy Spirit living in them. They cannot fall away from the Lord.
They’re indwelt by the Holy Spirit, so they’re not going to be led astray. But if it was possible for them to be led astray, they would be led astray. Because man, these false Christ and these false prophets are good, and they’re doing miraculous signs. They’re doing things that are supernatural. And because of that. Right. He’s saying if it were possible, man, it would be done because this is amazing what they’re doing.
That’s it’s just a hyperbolas way to say this. Very amazing what’s happening during this period of time. And this is what we’re seeing to the Thessalonians when Paul is talking in second Thessalonians chapter one. I’m sorry, in chapter two, when he talks about this, he tells prophetically what’s going to happen in the tribulation period. And he says this.
He says that the man of lawlessness is going to exalt himself above every so-called God or object of worship. You think, how is he going to do that? Well, it says he’s going to do things that are miraculous. It says in verse nine, he’s going to come with the activity of Satan, with all the power and false signs and wonders.
It’s not that they’re false and that they’re not real signs. They’re signs and wonders and that they break natural law, but they’re down by the power of Satan and with all the wicked deception. Right. For those who are perishing. So it’s going to suck in all the people that are non-Christians. Why? Because they refuse to love the truth.
So the cross-reference, which I hope your Bible has, and I’m not even seeing if mine does, but it should have the cross reference to Second Thessalonians chapter two, verses nine and ten, because that’s what the false Christ and the false prophets ultimately are going to do in the end times. The ultimate one is the Antichrist and the false prophet that the book of Revelation talks about.
And Paul is given a tip of the hat to that and giving some insight to it in Second Thessalonians chapter two, verses eight and nine. So if it only applies to the end times, then it doesn’t apply, because I’m thinking of this as signs for the he says watch for the signs for the end times. And if the end times are coming, you know, and all this deception is coming.
So as, as Christians, we don’t have to worry about, well, we don’t have to worry. We have to be we have to be wise and and you know, and I can’t think of it. But anyway. Well, okay, now I am going to say you need to worry about it, but not the ultimate. In other words, chapter 24 of Matthew, this all of it discourse is about the tribulation period.
But I’m I’m going to look at first John chapter two, and it says this in verse 18, children, it’s the last hour. In other words, it’s the last period of time. You’ve heard that the Antichrist is coming. Okay. So I’m going to say, yeah, that’s what Matthew 24 is about. But then he says, now many antichrists have come.
Okay. The point is there’s an antichrist that’s coming. But we got many antichrists now. So yes, the ultimate antichrist is coming. The ultimate man of lawlessness is coming, as Second Thessalonians calls him. But there’s plenty of things ramped up that look like it. So the ultimate man of lawlessness is going to come with real miraculous signs. But there’s plenty of precursors to that.
So the spirit of what we see in Matthew 24, it’s like, I wouldn’t let my guard down, right? There’s plenty of people like, I’ve been up here to the Anaheim Convention Center. And just because I wanted to see the stuff for myself as a pastor, because people were saying, oh, there’s miracles going on, the miracle workers in town like, okay, I’m going to go take a look at this.
And so I went there to see it, and I’m thinking, okay, people are getting sucked into this. They’re putting money in the offering for these people. People are showing up with wheelchairs, pushing their grandma into this place, trying to get their miracle. I’m thinking this is all shyster ism, and I know it is going into it. And I get to watch this firsthand.
I’m thinking, how are these these these shysters, you know, how are they deceiving all these people? Well, they are deceiving people, and they’re pretty good at it, right? They’re charlatans and they’re good at it. And they’re filling up the Anaheim Convention Center with it. And I’m thinking, well, they’re false prophets and they’re false Christs. They’re saying they’re anointed by God.
That’s what Christ means. They’re anointed by God, but they’re not. Well, they’re performing signs, but not the great signs of the real Antichrist. So in a sense, right, they are Antichrist, but they’re not the Antichrist. So that’s why I think of first John chapter two, verse 18, children. Right. We’re in the last time, the last hour. You’ve heard that the Antichrist is coming now, the Antichrist, he’s coming, but many antichrists have come.
So in other words, there’s plenty of this as a precursor. But the real one, he’s out there and he’s coming. And that’s the one that’s being talked about in Matthew 14. I’m Matthew 24. That’s the one that’s talked about in second Thessalonians two. That’s the one that’s talked about in the book of revelation. So I’m going to say when you said, I’m not trying to hold you to it as a fastidious guy, but when you said, we don’t have to worry about it, we don’t have to worry about that one.
But we got to worry about a lot of other ones, because a lot of your friends and a lot of my friends, they fall into believing this stuff they see on TV, and a lot of the stuff they hear about people doing stuff that suck them into false Christs that, you know, are saying, I’m an anointed one. I come get your miracle here, or come listen to this.
And they’re believing stuff they shouldn’t believe and they’re claiming miracles that aren’t happening. Yeah. That’s right. A lot of wolves and sheep’s clothing. And you think, how do they get arenas full of people, right? I’ve been preaching the Bible and I think accurately for a long time. You know, I can’t fill the Anaheim Convention Center right there, filling the Anaheim convention.
How do you do that? Right. Well, they’re promising a lot. And I see the same people in wheelchairs being wheeled out after it’s all over. How do you do that? Well, they’re pretty good at deceiving people. And I’m thinking Jesus warned us to be careful. Now, the Antichrist, at the end of time, he’s not going to fill one little arena here and one little arena there.
The Bible says the whole earth is going to go after him. So the real one, the big ones coming. But there’s a lot of little ones already in place. Well, I say we don’t have to worry, because if I believe preacher like you, I’m not going to worry about it because I don’t think I’m going to be here right.
For the big one. You’re not. But the little one. We got to protect ourselves and other people from. From the little ones. Okay. All right. Very good. Jane.
